The cache is located along a historic Gold Rush road that in 1850 was called Cape Horn Road. Until recently the vineyards along this part of the road were part of the Stevenot Winery. The winery was then briefly operated as the Albeno Munari Winery, but is now up for sale. Around 1850 there were three ranches in this valley that supported the booming Gold Rush town of Murphys. The Shaw Ranch eventually became the Stevenot Winery, and the old Thompson and Dragone ranches were further down the road. There is a historical monument at the site of the Dragone Ranch, now a private residence, about 1/4 mile down the road from the cache. The road turns to dirt shortly thereafter, eventually leading down into Angels Camp if you are adventurous. This is a very scenic road, but it is definitely a backroad!
If you are approaching from Sheep Ranch Road, there is parking just before the cache site, but none past it for about 1/4 mile. BYOP.
