Colton was first called Pleasant Valley Juntion then in 1898 the town's name was changed to Colton. Colton loaded coal from a large loading facility built there,and in the fall of 1904 came the discovery of ozokerite. They soon started mining the waxy substance from the largert known ozokerite mine in the world.In March of 1905 the mine had a mill and a 40 horsepower boiler to operate the hoists and pumps. Ozoberite is a very rare material never having been disovered in the United States outside of Utah, ozoberite was used among other things, to make the new phonograph records.
