This cache is on one of Hawkes Bay's Cycle Trail / Walkways. It is only about 100m from the busy Expressway, near the southern end of the Estuary Bridge.
There is room to park on the shoulder of this busy road, but be very careful about traffic, as this is a 100km per hour section of the roadway.
The walkway passes under the bridge, so if you need to be on the other side of the road you should use the underpass rather than walking across the road.
This area of freshwater marsh provides a variety of habitat that complements the tidal saline waters and mudflats of the estuary proper. With a good mixture of shallow open water, expanses of rushes and sedges, and a margin of short grasses, it caters for the needs of a large number of different birds.
It provides a year-round home for birds such as Pied Stilt, Dabchick, Pukeko, Shoveler Duck, Black Swan, Mallard, and Canada Goose.
It is also a high-tide refuge for shallow estuary-feeding birds such as Godwit, Knot, Golden Plover, Oyster-catcher, and Royal Spoonbill.
Here each bird can find its own favourite food, among insects, snails, worms, fish, seeds, and plants.
