Geocache Description:

Cyclone Gabrielle was a severe tropical cyclone that devastated the North Island from 12 to 15 February 2023. Its effects were widespread, but particularly intense in the Hawke's Bay and Tairawhiti regions, with large areas of flooding and damage to roads and other infrastructure. Rotorua also suffered the damaging effects of this storm. The Rotorua Lakefront walkway was lifted off its foundations and abandoned. Rather than replacing the boardwalk, it looks like the Rotorua Lakes Council have re routed the trail through the former golf course.

My Dad used to walk along the lakefront as part of his daily exercise routine. The boardwalk was new when Dad discovered it, and he was quite enthusiastic about this trail. He went on to tell some friends, and they often joined him. They would walk right around the Point and loop back into town... Dad and most of his friends have since passed away, and this cache is a tribute to their friendship and the enjoyment of fresh air and exercise.

People are always around, so stealth is important. The walk has so many points of interest and views to be taken. I would suggest you come with a camera. Besides, taking a photo is a good way to disguise your search. You will have excellent views across Lake Rotorua to Mokoia Island and Mt Ngongotaha. Both of these landmarks are remnants of past volcanic activity. The City of Rotorua is contained within a volcanic caldera. The lake itself sits in the collapsed floor of the crater. Behind the walkway, you will catch glimpses of the Government Gardens and Rotorua Museum.

The cache can be accessed from the lakefront end of the city, or by driving through the Government Gardens to Motutara Point. This section of track is flat and will suit walkers of all ages. There are lots of places to park your vehicle and walk. As this is a busy area, we always recommend that you lock your vehicle and hide any valuables out of sight. You are also close to water, so small children must be monitored at all times.

The Cache: Follow the gravel pathway through the former golf course grounds. You will come to a point where there is a break between the trees with access to the lake (Good views).

CONGRATULATIONS: FTF SPIDERHOUSE
