Geocache Description:

Halloween upon us so why not put out some treats for my geocaching friends to settle our cravings for those sweet things we all call caches?

Name Origin

  • The name "turtle" was given to the candy based on its resemblance to the reptile's body, shell and legs. Nuts peek out from under the domed top of the candy and look like four turtle legs sticking out from under a shell. As the chocolate runs down the top of the candy on either end, it forms shapes similar to a turtle's head and tail.

Turtle History

  • DeMet's Candy Company, founded in Chicago in 1898, is widely held to have made turtles famous. The company quickly expanded to three locations and, in the 1950s, it was bought by a Canadian chocolate manufacturer. The next three decades included ownership changes and mergers until 1988, when the company was bought by Nestlé which rejuvenated the line and saw turtles experience a growth in sales. Signature Snacks purchased the brand in 2007 and changed the name back to DeMet's Candy Company.
