Geocache Description:

These walls are a common feature locally, Johnstown castle estate covers approx 1000 acres, these walls were built as boundaries.

Johnstown Castle dates back to 19th century and is nestled within fifty acres of ornamental grounds. Johnstown Castle offers activities like a walk through the wooded grounds which has over two hundred different kinds of trees and shrubs or you can relax by the castle lakeside with its Gothic towers and waterfalls. Walk along the Castle lake terrace walk lined with statues to the Garden lake. Both lakes are home to a wide range of waterfowl which includes beauty swans, water hens, little grebes and heron. Pass through the Devil's Gateway into the walled ornamental gardens. This can be considered a hidden paradise which provides a mutitude and colourful array of flowering plants. The gardens at the Johnstown Town are italian garden containing a shaded picnic area where you sit and watch the natural aspects suchs as animal like the peacocks walk by. Another attraction is the ruin of a medieval tower house called Rathlannon Castle. (Please note that Johnstown Castle itself is not open to the public) The Castle was built for the Grogan Morgan family between 1810 and 1855.  The property was presented as a gift to the Irish Nation in 1945.  Johnstown Castle was designed by Daniel Robertson, perhaps more renowned for his design of Powerscourt Gardens.
