Geocache Description:

Tranquility isn't a word which has always described Noirmont. During WWII this part of Jersey's southern coast was what the Nazi's called The Atlantic Wall.

This was part of an extensive system of coastal fortifications built by the Nazis between 1942 - 1945 along the western coast of Europe as a defense against an anticipated Allied invasion of the mainland continent from Great Britain. These fortifications ran from northern Norway down to the southern Atlantic coast in France. The Channel Islands were heavily fortified. Hitler had decreed that 10% of the steel and concrete used in the Atlantic Wall go to the Channel Islands, because of the propaganda value of controlling British territory. The Channel Islands were some of the most densely fortified areas in Europe, with a host of tunnels, casemates and coastal artillery positions.

To locals take the time to walk around and reflect on this part of our island in what was some of our darkest hours of our history, and for tourists learn about our past and take wonder from what has been left from it.

To everyone take time to enjoy the views which overlook St. Aubin's Bay, Elizabeth Castle, and the harbour & port of Saint Helier. On a good day the Normandy coast of France is visible to the south-east, as is The Minquiers, a groups of islands and rocks 9 miles south of Jersey.

So tranquility hasn't always been the word used to describe Noirmont Point, but luckily today the word can be, along-with some others.
