Famous Captains series
Captain George Vancouver was an English officer in the British Royal Navy and is best known for his 105,000 km voyage and expedition which explored and charted North America's NW Pacific Coast regions in his ships HMS Discovery and HMS Chatham. He also explored and charted the Hawaiian Islands and SW coast of Australia.
People know of the Captain due to the city and Island named after him, and also his explorations, but he is all the more famous for the very detailed and comprehensive charts that he produced of the Pacific NW. These charts were used by navigators for over 100 years.
Though the Captain was one of Britain's greatest explorers and navigators, he died in obscurity at the age of forty, less than three years after completing his voyages and having spent 27 years in the Royal Navy.
