Captain Edward Smith was commander of the RMS Titanic of the White Star Shipping Line, that sank on April 15, 1912 due to collision with an iceberg.
The Captain had gained a reputation for flamboyance and was much sought after by passengers as the captain to sail with. Little is known about Smith's actions in the last two hours of the Titanic voyage, but his legendary skills of leadership seemed to have left him and he was seriously indecisive and unusually cautious during the last two hours as when he wavered as to when it came to giving the order to load and lower the lifeboats. He had to be approached and prodded by a junior officer to give the order.
Many have wondered why, with all the warnings regarding the iceberg threats, why the Captain did not slow down or turn south. He was found not guilty of the shipwreck.
