Tumbarumba is a lovely little town in the foothills of the Snowy Mtns. Tumbarumba started as a gold mining town and quickly progressed to wool, fat lambs, cattle, apples, crops and more recently grapes. Tumbarumba cool climate wines have a good reputation amongst those who regard themselves as a bit expert.
Gold was first found in Tumbarumba in 1855 and mining continued intermittently until about 1954. There is still much evidence of the mining around the town and surrounding areas. In fact the Hume and Hovell walking track goes through an oldmining area at Burra which is a short distance from Tumbarumba. miners built a tunnel to divert the creek. Diverting a creek happened in Tumbarumba itself.
Tumbarumba has all the usual things small country towns have and then some more.
The cache was originally named for the 4 Bears Cafe which was located in the shop directly behind the cache. Unfortunately the Cafe and all the bears are no longer here but the cache lives on.
