Geocache Description:

This cache has been placed as part of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri’s Centennial Geocaching Project “Caching in on our Legacy” celebrating the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting in the USA.

Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low began Girl Scouting in Savannah Georgia on March 12, 1912. Within that decade Girl Scouting was present in the Hannibal area when Mrs. William B. Smith started a troop in 1919.   During the 1930’s Mrs. Neva Cordry and Beulah Smith had an active troop of 13 girls.
In the early 1940’s the Girl Scout troops were coordinated into the Becky Thatcher Council, which included a 4 county area. Mrs. Frank Berry was their first council president. In 2007 the Becky Thatcher Council was merged with the Girl Scout Council of Greater St Louis to become the  Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri Council, which today includes 27 counties.

Many Girl Scouts and volunteers in the legacy Becky Thatcher Council are familiar with Camp Oko Tipi along the Mississippi River just north of Saverton, Missouri.  Camp Oko Tipi was first organized in February 1935 and during the summer of 1936 the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and the YMCA began using the camp. Girls continued to enjoy camping at Oko Tipi thru the next decades and in 1975 the Becky Thatcher Council hosted a national conference, "Becky Beckons", at the camp. Girls from 49 of the 50 states came to enjoy a taste of the Girl Scout experience along the Mississippi.
Camp Oko Tipi has been one of several camps in the northeastern Missouri counties to be used by the Girl Scouts, who have many fond memories and tales to tell of their Girl Scout camping days.

We would like to thank the Camp Oko Tipi Corporation for granting us permission to place this cache.
