Geocache Description:

This geocache is located on a firelane that runs along the North Boundary of Highlands Hammock State Park. The North Boundary can be accessed by taking firelanes North from North Branch. North Branch runs through the highlands of the park and is part of the bike trail. This road is also often walked or biked by visitors, as it is NOT accessible by vehicle. BYOP. The Common Flicker is a woodpecker that forages mostly on the ground primarily eating ants. Like other woodpeckers the Flicker has an unusually long tongue effected by a unique elongation of a set of small bones and muscles in their skull known as the hyoid apparatus. The tips of woodpecker’s tongues have barbed tips with sticky secretions facilitating in the extraction of their prey. When compared to body size the Common Flicker may have the longest tongue, measuring 5 inches from the tip to the hyoid horns which are anchored to the back of skull.
