The settlements of Ocean View and Brighton are separated by a large bluff which is known as "Big Rock" which juts towards the ocean to the northeast of Brighton Beach. Brighton was named by an early resident, Hugh Williams, for Brighton in England. The poet James K. Baxter (1926 - 1972) grew up in Brighton and several of his verses relate to this area and in particular Big Rock. There are several caves in this rock of which it is thought James K. Baxter wrote about in his poems: "I climbed up a hole in a bank in a hill above the sea, and there fell into the attitude of listening out of which poems may arise...". "The whole weight of the hill hung over me. Gladly I would have stayed there and been hidden from every beast that moves beneath the sun" (The Cave 1948) and "A kind of a cave - still on the brandy, and coming in from outside (The Party 1966). The cache is near the footpath leading to Big Rock from the Brighton side, make sure you climb to the top of Big Rock after finding the cache, the views are awesome. Just take care of little ones in this area. Parking is not available near GZ, so it is best to either park at the designated parking bay before Big Rock on the Ocean View side or at the surf lifesaving club at Brighton and walk back up the road. Bring your own pen/pencil and please replace the cache out of sight.
