Geocache Description:

Camo'd plastic Snapware container with small trade items and a bagged log book.

From the north end of the Gulf Junction parking lot, find the rough path behind and a bit left od the bluebird box and the mile marker, go up about 50' then look to your right to the top of a hill to see a large oak with low branches. It's there. For you railroad buffs, the path you walked up is the old right-of-way for the line from Inverness turning west to Crystal River. The "cut" on the other side of the oak is the old RR right-of-way to Dunnellon. The north end of the Wye is the still active rail line from Dunnellon to the Crystal River Power Plant. "Wye at Gulf Junction" is one of six historically themed caches along the Withlacoochee State Trail. A "Wye" is a railroad intersection shaped like the letter "Y" that allows an engineer to turn right or left or turn the whole train around depending on how the switches are set. Located at the north terminus of the Withlacoochee State Trail, Gulf Junction was where southbound trains from High Springs and Dunnellon could either continue south to Inverness and Tampa or head west to Crystal River. Since the State of Florida purchased the rail line south of the junction in the late 1980's to build the Withlachoochee State Trail, only the top part of the "Wye" is still an active rail line. The other two "Wye" junctions on the Withlacoochee State Trail are located at Croom in Hernando County and at Trilby in Pasco County. I also have two historically themed caches located near the Wye at Croom.
