Tisíce rokov bolo snahou človeka pokoriť tmu, ktorá bola považovaná za symbol nevedomosti, neistoty, sídlo zlých duchov a nekalých úmyslov. „Zvíťaziť“ nad tmou sa podarilo v roku 1879, kedy Edison objavil žiarovku. Rozsvietil sa celý svet... Časom sa však zistilo, že aj svetlo má svoje tienisté stránky. Vznikol nový fenomén – svetelné znečistenie.
Svetelné znečistenie je súhrn nepriaznivých vplyvov umelého osvetlenia na životné prostredie. Jeho zdrojom je svetlo vyrobené človekom a umelo pridávané do nočnej krajiny. Je to predovšetkým svetlo, ktoré nesvieti tam, kam potrebujeme (na cestu alebo chodník), ale do oblakov, na hviezdy, do lesa a do okien ľudí. Negatívne pôsobí na rastliny, živočíchy aj človeka. Svetelné znečistenie má na svedomí miliardy životov. Spôsobuje hromadný úhyn hmyzu, vtákov, netopierov, obojživelníkov, plazov a niektorých morských živočíchov. Svetelným znečistením sú narušené celé ekosystémy a väzby v nich, preto by sme mali urobiť všetko preto, aby bolo narušenie nočného životného prostredia čo najmenšie. Nežijeme tu totiž sami!

A man finally triumphed over the darkness in 1879 when Thomas Alva Edison invented the light bulb. The world became illuminated. However, in the course of time, we have realized that light has also a lot of negative aspects. A new phenomenon has been recognized – Light pollution.
Light pollution is a broad term that refers to the multiple problems induced by artificial lighting on the environment. The main source of the light pollution is the artificial lighting produced by man on the night country. It is especially the light that illuminates not only on streets and roads (where desired) but also on clouds and stars, into the woods as well as the windows. Light pollution negatively affects plants, animals as well as humans. It is responsible for the billions of lives. It results in massive perishing of insects, birds, bats, amphibians, reptiles, and some sea species. Light pollution disrupts the whole ecosystems and their correlations. Henceforth, people need to make effort to preserve the natural environment of nocturnal life and disrupt it as little as possible. We are not alone here!
