Geocache Description:

Take the Community Gardens turnoff from Route 500 in Labrador City, very short hike in brush, Cache a Pre Form with lots of soon to be history pennies that is tied to a spruce tree. Labrador City is situated on the rich iron ore deposits of the Labrador trough on the mainland portion of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Early in the 196O's the town of Labrador City was built to accommodate employees of the Iron Ore Company of Canada and was incorporated in 1961. Development of the area's impressive iron ore bed required skilled workers. Good salaries and benefits and an excellent quality of life lured individuals to what was in the early 196O's, a truly remote region. People came from all over the world for what they anticipated to be a year or two. Some forty years later, these early pioneers have or are now approaching retirement with second and even third generations residing in the region. Lots of the citizens were used to having gardens in their former homes so a group got together and cleared the land where the garden plots are located. The soil here is rich and the exposure to the sun is good. Dispite the rather short season most root vegetables grow well. It may be a labour of love but many families enjoy locally grown potatoes most of the year.
