A regular container located in Chambliss Park, which features a tennis court, dog exercise area, and access to the lovely Dora Kelley Nature Park. There is a birdhouse nearby; the birdhouse is NOT the cache.
This cache honors my brother, who sometimes calls me “sassafras.” I don’t mind the nickname—sassafras is one of my favorite trees!
Sassafras albidum (also known as White Sassafras, Red Sassafras, or Silky Sassafras) is common in eastern North America. Its name is probably derived from the Latin word saxifrage, "stone-breaker."
Sassafras is beautiful and distinctive. A single sassafras tree or shrub may have three differently shaped leaves: three-lobed leaves, two-lobed leaves shaped like mittens, and simple elliptical leaves without lobes. The roots of the tree can send up shoots, allowing a single plant to create a colony of clones, and old stumps can grow new trees. All parts of the plant are aromatic, making its leaves, twigs, and fruits tasty food for many animals. Humans also use it to make perfumes, root beer, tea, gumbo filé, and candy.* It is a popular ornamental tree, and its durable wood is occasionally used to make furniture.
Alas, the cache is not hidden at a sassafras tree. There is one, however, on the right side of the entrance to the Dora Kelley Nature Park down the hill.
