Cache Info: This geocache is an ammo can located on a tract of land purchased by DeKalb County over ten years ago. The tract is isolated from the main portion of Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve land, but it is within the boundary of the greater Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area. This tract of land features a beautiful hardwood forest and is located along an exceptionally scenic section of the South River, featuring a series of shoals.

Parking is off Klondike Road at the South River Bridge. The woods road that extends out from the parking area is for hiking only and can't be used by motor vehicles. A new 600 foot long nature trail, located close to the river and the shoals, departs from the woods road at a wide spot in the road next to a sewer line manhole and ties back into the woods road a short distance from a power line R/W.

The 63 mile long South River begins in the city of East Point near the Atlanta Airport. It flows thru DeKalb and Rockdale Counties and forms the boundary between Henry and Newton Counties before emptying into Lake Jackson. The river has a history of water pollution issues due to sewage spills and storm water runoff. Citizen action, especially by the South River Watershed Alliance, has resulted in an improving water quality over the past ten years. Large amounts of trash, moving down the river during storm water flows and depositing at this location, continues to be a serious problem. The Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area schedules periodic trash cleanup events by volunteer organizations.

This nature preserve, like other Georgia woodlands, has ticks during all but the winter season. Take precautions that include wearing a hat, a long sleeve shirt, and long pants with legs tucked into socks. Wear light colored clothing for ease of spotting ticks, especially deer ticks that are the size of a pin head. Use bug spray with the chemical DEET and especially spray around the ankle area.
