This section of the South River reveals a more active and dynamic side of the landscape, where shoals break the flow of the water and create movement, sound, and texture along the river’s edge.
This geocache is located on a tract of land purchased by DeKalb County over a decade ago. While the property is separated from the main portion of Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve, it still lies within the boundary of the greater
Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area.
The area features a hardwood forest alongside an especially scenic stretch of the South River, where a series of shoals create shallow, rocky sections that shape the flow of the water.
Parking is available off Klondike Road near the South River bridge. From there, a woods road extends into the property and is intended for foot traffic only.
A short nature trail, located closer to the river and the shoals, branches off from this woods road at a wider clearing near a sewer line manhole. It reconnects to the main path near a power line right-of-way, creating a short loop through this section of forest.
The South River stretches approximately 63 miles, beginning near East Point by the Atlanta airport. It flows through DeKalb and Rockdale Counties, forming part of the boundary between Henry and Newton Counties before eventually reaching Lake Jackson.
Over the years, the river has faced challenges from water pollution caused by sewage spills and stormwater runoff. Efforts by local organizations, including the South River Watershed Alliance, have helped improve water quality over time.
However, stormwater still carries debris downstream, and this area can collect significant amounts of trash during heavy flows. Cleanup efforts, often supported by volunteers through the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area, continue to play an important role in protecting this environment.
The site is managed by Rockdale County Greenspace, helping preserve this area for both wildlife and public enjoyment.
