Geocache Description:

Quick P&G in a beautiful historic cemetery

I wanted to place a cache on my birthday & what better place than a historic cemetery? LOL (If any of you follow my caches, you will see I have a special liking for cemetery caches, especially when the cemetery is old & has historical value )

Oakwood Cemetery was established in 1872 on 20 acres.  In 1886, a portion of the cemetery was purchased by Civil War veterans who came to Parsons as settlers after the war. In 1887 they named their portion of the cemetery the Antietam Circle in honor of one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. In 1889 addition cemetery lots were purchased and Antietam Circle number two was created.

The Antietam Circles at Oakwood Cemetery in Parsons, Kansas are a must visit for Civil War and cemetery buffs. There are two adjacent Antietam Circles and both contain Civil War graves and monuments. Circle #2 also has an American flag, cast iron gate, and four copper statues. Circle #1 has two 8 inch Columbiad cannons and a 28 foot tall concrete rotunda which was constructed in 1905.

The 1911 cast iron gateway to Oakwood Cemetery was donated by the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.)

The cemetery is open from 7am to dusk.

Please be sure to put the cache back in the exact spot you found it - thank you!!

Congratulations to Wood-n-block for FTF and THANK YOU for the birthday wishes & the favorite point - I really appreciate them both! :)

PLEASE watch out for wasps - there are several wasp nests in this area, but the cache location was clear of them at the time of placement. Just make sure you look & see the cache before retrieval - don't just go poking your fingers into random holes!
