NOR I den vestlige verden, pleier ugla tradisjonelt å bli forbundet med visdom og kunnskap, og med den greske gudinnen Athene. Det er på grunn av at Athene ble regnet som fuglegudinnen i gresk mytologi, og viste seg ofte i skikkelsen av en ugle. Athene var ikke bare gudinnen for visdom, men også gudinnen for kunst og ferdigheter. Med disse forbindelsene, ble ugler også symbol for læring, institusjoner for læring, og er en del av mange universiteters våpenskjold

ENG In the western world the owl is usually associated with wisdom and knowledge, and with the Greek goddess Athena. It is because of that Athena was considered as the bird goddess in Greek mythology, and often showed herself in the shape of an owl. Athena was not only the goddess of wisdom but also the goddess of arts and skills. With these associations, the owls also became symbol of learning, institutions of learning, and is a part of many universities Coat of Arms.
