Geocache Description:

Palmerston North's biggest park.

The Victoria Esplanade was created in 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria's 60th (diamond) Jubilee. In 1968 the Dugald McKenzie Rose Garden was opened. It incorporates the International Rose Trial grounds and supports over 5000 roses. in 1969 a miniature railway was installed and then extended in 2006. The complete circuit is now 2.2km long and sports three stations. The Cafe Esplanade started life in 1889 as a post office on the corner of Main and The Square. After just 17 years it could no longer cope with the volume of mail and a larger building was commissioned. The old building was used for various local body functions, including some time as a magistrates court. In 1989 it was moved to the Esplanade for use as the café. The cache is a bison tube, accessable anytime day or night, however the vehicle gates are locked at night. Check the times at the entrance! On nice weekends the railway will be running, muggles may be a problem then. FTF gets to FTF a new TB!
