Geocache Description:

The cache is dedicated to the remnants of the castle knows as 'Amade Var', named after one of the two ruling viceroys of the northern Hungaria (now eastern Slovakia, north-east Hungary, western Ukraine) Amadeus Aba (Hu: Amade Aba, Sk: Omodej Aba, lat: Omodei Oba), the second was palatine Máté Csák de Trencsén (Sk: Matus Cak Trenciansky).

The Amade Castle

The Amade Castle was built between 1271 and 1288. It was first mentioned in the document in the era of King of Hungary Ladislavus IV in 1288. It was in possession of Amadeus Aba. After his death, the castle was in possession of King Charles Robert of Anjou. In 1391 the castle was doneted to the Bebek family by king Sigismund.

Amadeus Aba (1254-1311)

was a prominent descendant of the Aba family (dynasty, which has its root in the age of Attila the Hun). The dynasty may have been named after the most prominent member of the family Samuel Aba who became King of Hungary (1041–1044).
Amadeus Aba was a Hungarian oligarch in the Kingdom of Hungaria (during the reign of kings Ladislaus IV and Andrew III) who ruled de facto independently the northern and north-eastern counties of the kingdom (today parts of Hungary, Slovakia and Ukraine). He held the office of Palatine (the highest-ranking dignitary in the Kingdom of Hungary after the King) and was also royal judge.

Later, he got into conflicts with the burghers of Kosice, which he tried to dominate. Kosice then became the support of the king in the fight against Amadeus. In one of the skirmishes he was assasinated at the end. This happened at the south gate in the city of Kassa (Kosice) by one of the Angevin (Anjou) dynasty supporters. The sons of Amadeus compeled the court, this has been subsequently used by Charles Robert to suppress their power. Amadeus family members undertook that they will not pursue to dominate the Košice and do not hinder their expansion. In addition, they had to return Aba and Zemplin county and to fully subject to the king. Amadeus family adopted these conditions only formally. They have established an alliance with Mate Csak of Trencin in spring 1312 and they devastated the surroundings of the royal town of Sarospatak. Then they resisted the siege of the royal army on Saros Castle (sk:Sarisky hrad). When trying to conquer the city of Kosice, they (Amadeus family with support of Mate Csak army) were defeated at the battle of Rozgony (Rozhanovce, Slovakia) on June 15, 1312 by the royal army of King Charles I. Dominion Of Aba

Amade and his brother Finta inherited Castle in Nevicke (Ukraine), Castle Szokoly (Sokol, Slovakia). His dominion developed gradually. In 1288, King Ladislaus IV granted him the County Ung (Ukraine). Around 1300, he acquired Boldogko Castle and Gonc Castle, later he also held Regéc Castle. In 1310, he occupied Lublo castle (Hrad Stara Lubovna, Slovakia) and Munkacs (Mukachevo, Ukraine). He governed his possessions from his seat in Gonc Castle. Following his death, his sons could not maintain his power, and after their defeat at the Battle of Rozgony (Rozhanovce, Slovakia) his dominion disintegrated. Most of his castles and possessions were obtained by members of the Drugeth family in the 1320s-1340s.
