Geocache Description:

Holden Beach is a Transgressive barrier island that affects the erosion and accretion of both the island and the main land. This cache is NOT WHEELCHAIR FRIENDLY. This cache should be completed in the daylight to avoid having to hike to get the visual clues to answer the questions.

Another cache brought to you by a proud member of the USCGA

Tide and current data is available from the NOAA Tide Stations at http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/

The main cause of long-term erosion in and around Holden Beach is a natural processes including: waves, currents caused by wind, high tides, and rivers that flow into the ocean leaving sediment. These forces cause North Carolina’s beaches to shift. A beach may lose sand (erosion) or gain it (accretion). Erosion tends to occur faster in some areas than in others, especially near inlets and capes, where sand shifts rapidly. An eroding beach may lose several feet of sand a year. For all the sand lost from a beach, the action of the waves also brings an equal amount of sand ashore. Thus, although the shape of a beach will change, the beach itself will remain. Note the changes due to ebb channel rearrangement at the Shallotte Inlet in the aerial photos posted in the photo gallery, over only a 5 year period.

To log this earthcache please email the answers to the following questions to me (do not post answers in your log), within 5 days of logging the cache:
1) In your opinion, can you see evidence of erosion in layout of the nearby streets that you drove in on?  If so, what evidence?
2) Cross the walkway over the dune in front of you and look to your east (left).  In your opinion, can you see evidence of erosion of the beach?  If so, what evidence?
3)  How many steps are there on the street side (parking side) on the walk way crossing over the dune?

If the answers are not received within 5 days, or an email requesting an extension, the log will be deleted without notice.
