Beam Parklands is a 53 hectare (130 acre) green space in the heart of Dagenham. This urban oasis operates primarily as an area of flood prevention. The River Beam and River Wantz meet in the Parklands giving host to a picturesque mix of habitats including reed beds, shallow ponds, woodlands and large areas of rare acid grassland. The focal point of the park is the large viewing mound which has been re-landscaped on the site of the old Dagenham Smallpox Isolation Hospital.
Beam Parklands, Beam Valley Country Park, Eastbrookend Country Park and the Chase Nature Reserve form the Dagenham Corridor, the backbone of the many sites run by the Parks & Countryside Ranger Service of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. This cache is located in the vicinity of a
Balsam Poplar that stands proud amongst a group of the most mature trees on site. Poplars are widely planted in Northern Europe for timber. Keep an eye out for the area’s resident
Green Woodpecker.
