Geocache Description:

A micro cache located by the only remaining part of Leith Citadel, the Citadel Gate, dating from 1656.

After Cromwell's victory at the Battle of Dunbar in 1650 and subsequent occupation of Scotland, a fort known as Leith Citadel was erected in 1656 to regulate the port traffic. All that remains of the fort today is a vaulted gateway in Dock Street which was its main entrance.

There is free parking in the street close to the cache. The site is overlooked by a few flats and is adjacent to a car park so stealth is required. The area in front of the archway is a small private garden enclosed by railings. Don't try and enter this area, the cache is accessible from the street.

The cache is a short distance from The Shore area of Leith where you will find plenty of bars & restaurants.

You can read more about the history of Leith on Wikipedia.
