Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
Learn more about the Endangered Roseate Tern by locating this Species At Risk geocache site. The Roseate Tern is listed as endangered by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSWIC). There are estimated to be less than 100 breeding pairs in Nova Scotia
Park close to Westhaver Beach, bring some binoculars and while searching for the geocache, try to observe the elusive Roseate Tern on Westhaver Is. Mahone Bay once hosted 1/3 of Canada's breeding population, although lately the Roseate Tern is only a rare visitor to the bay. Human disturbance, rising sea levels, predators and extreme weather events have all contributed to their disappearance. The best months to see terns in the bay are between May-August, the abundant species are Arctic and Common Terns, but occasionally a Roseate Terns will make an appearance! Please report any sightings to the Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation at 902 634 9977
