Geocache Description:

Almost hidden from view now, these are the remains of Number one battery, one of four batteries and a redoubt built in this area as part of the coastal defences against invasion from France during the french revolutionary wars. Armed with four cannons it was maintained against the Napoleonic invasion threat but remodelled in 1860 for Five heavier guns. Another example of this type of defence work survives a mile or so further along the coast road in number two battery at Lade. Do take a walk around this mound as you can see some interesting remains including a part of the outer wall in good condition. Uneven ground so take care. The cache is not hidden anywhere on the main actual remains. If you don't sign the log book don't log it online.
