The Chicago Great Western Railway (CGW) was a major freight and passenger rail line between 1885-1968, servicing MN, IA, IL, KS, & NE. It merged with Chicago and North Western Railway in 1968, which abandoned most of the CGW's trackage.
The CGW tracks ran parallel to the Chicago Aurora & Elgin Railroad (CA&E), an electric, interurban rail line that serviced passengers between Aurora, Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles, Elgin, and Chicago. It operated from 1902-1957. Much of the present Illinois Prairie Path is on the old right of way of this railroad.
Between the former tracks of the two railroads, lies the Elmhurst Great Western Prairie. This was real estate too small to develop, so it remained undisturbed prairie. At one time most of the northern two-thirds of Illinois was prairie. Now, less than one-tenth of one percent of that original grassland remains.
From this cache site, the Elmhurst Great Western Prairie extends east to Spring Road and west to Salt Creek.
Bike is the best mode of transportation, but parking is available at Spring Road -- just north of the trail.
