Opgepast voor het water / beware of the water
Dit kanaaltje is de Bergenvaart. Deze vaart heeft een totale lengte van 23,660 km. Het werd in 1293 gegraven en in 1622 verbeterd. Het zogenaamde Houtem-sas werd in 1622 door Spanjaarden gebouwd om te beletten dat er in oorlogstijd overstromingswater uit Sint-Winoksbergen in Veurne-Ambacht kon binnendringen. Hoelang zou het geleden zijn dat hier nog eens een schip is versast? Hedentendage zijn het nog de eenden en ander waterwild die hier ronddobberen.
This canal is the Bergenvaart. This canal has a total length of 23,660 km. It was dug in 1293 and improved in 1622. The so-called “Houtem-sas” was built in 1622 by Spaniards to prevent flooding of Veurne during wartime with water from Sint-Winoksbergen. How long ago would it have been that a ship passed by this lock? Today only the ducks and other waterfowl float around here.
