Traveling the Mother Road in the early days could be quite a challenge especially with children. Parents had to find as many attractions and distractions to help pass the time on the road. Though radios were available, as a luxury add on in most cases, radio stations were sparse. No ipads, lap tops or MP3's back then. Car games like bingo and I spy helped as we all watched for some roadside item that was on our card.
One thing that did help was the roadside advertising of Burma Shave, typically five or six consecutive signs were posted on the edge of the highways. Everyone in the car would read the signs curious to learn the punchline and generally share a laugh. Like the old road itself the signs began fading into the twilight as speed increased and the Interstate system expanded. Watch the roadside as you travel this piece of the old road for other sets of reproduced signs and keep an eye out for antelope that also enjoy this backcountry byway. Here are just a few of the old slogans.
Slow down Pa
Sakes alive
Ma missed signs
Four and Five
Burma Shave
He played the Sax,
Had no B.O.
but his whiskers scratched
so she let him go.
Try Burma Shave.
The whale
Put Jonah
Down the hatch
But coughed him up
Because he scratched
Burma Shave
