Welcome to the Cooper's Island GIS Cache! Help yourself to a GIS Day bracelet!

No need to travel by boat or swim to this island! A lovely walk past some of Bermuda's best beaches will take you into Bermuda largest Nature Reserve to find this cache. (no vehicles allowed)

Cooper's Island is in the process of being "un-developed". Formerly owned and occupied by the U.S Army and later used for a NASA Tracking Station, in 2008 just over 60 acres were handed over to The Department of Conservation Services (DCS) to manage as a Nature Reserve. In a very successful partnership with HSBC Bermuda and the Department of Parks, several buildings have been demolished, invasive plants have been removed and hundreds of native and endemics plants have been planted. All in an effort to transform Cooper's Island into a unique experience for visitors and local residents to explore some of Bermuda's natural history.

What's GIS got to do with this? Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are a crucial tool in all conservation work. You can't manage and protect anything if you don't know where it is and how it relates to the area around it. Geographic information is an essential part of developing a conservation management plan. With surveys and maps of Cooper's Island DCS created the Master Plan, identifying and allocating appropriate areas for a Salt Water Marsh Reserve, Mangrove Reserve (coming soon), and several other unique habitats.

Be sure to check out the information boards inside that observation tower at the end of the peninsula. Yes you can go inside!

WARNING: The Police Firing Range is also in this area so don't be alarmed if you hear large bangs. You're perfectly safe.
