Geocache Description:

The Maryland Municipal League Geotrail 2013
Celebrating Maryland’s Cities and Towns.
Berlin - MML District 1

The trail consists of 10 MML participating Districts (regions).
The MML Geocache Trail project will launch January 5, 2013 with 49 participating cities and towns. A trackable geocoin will be awarded to the first 200 geocachers as an incentive for locating at least 2 municipal caches in each of the 10 participating districts. To be eligible for the coin, geocachers must download a MML 2013 passport, find and log at least 20 of the MML 2013 geocaches. Geocachers must record the code word from the cache in their passport, and post a picture at the cache location on the cache page with your found log in order to earn the coin. However, this is not required to log the find.

After finding at least two municipal caches in each of the 10 participating districts, geocachers may return their completed passport to the MML Office in Annapolis for validation to receive their collectable geocoin. Please refer to the passport or MML website for complete details.

For a complete list of participating towns or for updated information, visit the MML web site at MML link or the Maryland Geocaching Society web site at MGS Link

This cache is located at the Stephen Decatur Park & Monument. You are seeking a traditional hide stocked with a variety of items. Please adhere to all park rules and no night caching! If you wish to ear the new MML geocoin, don't forget to record the code word in your passport and post a picture at the cache location.

Stephen Decatur Park consists of approximately 21 acres and offers picnic and playground facilities and tennis and racquetball courts. A pavilion is available for rent for organized events. Stephen Decatur also has a nature pond and trail.

Stephen Decatur Park has long been a gathering place for many groups, families, and individuals, with certain groups returning on an annual basis. The Park has hosted the Berlin Fall Festival for over 30 years and, in the past decade, an African-American Heritage Festival has been held in Stephen Decatur Park several times.

The playground facilities include approximately a dozen pieces for use by the over 5 age group and a tot-lot for the 2-5 age group. Many of the playground pieces were replaced in 2005 through the Community Parks and Playground program.

The town of Berlin is rich with history. A visit is a trip back in time to the 19th Century. The downtown is so charming it has been used as the set for two Hollywood movies, “The Runaway Bride,” and “Tuck Everlasting.” The brick buildings, stone churches, and period wooden homes provide a setting for a town that has recently been designated as a hub of artistic activity. The designation as an “Arts and Entertainment District” by the State of Maryland, recognizes the cultural growth the town has enjoyed and encourages continued growth through economic incentives.

More recently the state also designated Downtown Berlin as an official Maryland Main Street Community.

The Atlantic Hotel was built in 1895 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Restoration of this grand hotel began in 1984 and by 1988 it was opened for guests. The hotel offers 16 guest rooms and a spacious dining room.

The Town of Berlin thanks you for visiting!
