This cache is put here to bring attention to the Staunton River. It can be reached from the water or from land.

If you look upstream past the first set of rapids you see, you'll notice a popular spot to stop while paddling down the river from Long Island. Cat Rock is as well known in these parts as Brookneal or Halifax. It stretches all the way across the river with a couple of gaps well suited for whitewater running. At the same place, on the other side of the river from where you seek the cache, are the remains of an old mill race. This is where the water would have been diverted from the river to an old grist mill.

If you try hard, you may even be able to imagine the batteaus that were used to carry cargo up and down the river from the plantations to the ports and back. Be sure to look for old structures near the GZ.

It's recommended that you don't go alone since there's safety in numbers. GZ will likely have plenty of briars in the summer, a machete may be needed.

There's no need to go past any posted signs: if you see those, you're on the wrong trail.
