Geocache Description:


This cache was placed during my first trip to the Salton Sea.  Having flown over it dozens of times between San Diego and Denver and read about it for years I had an idea of the areas of built up emptiness but was not prepared for what it was really like at ground level.  From looking at the aerial views it looked like some great planned community that had gone all wrong or had suddenly vanished.  Along the Sea there are streets everywhere named after past presidents and foreign countries and everything else in between laid out in fancy shapes but with sometimes only a single house for blocks.

The Salton Sea was created in the early 1900s when the Colorado River was diverted to irrigate farms nearby and the runoff formed a lake in the Salton Sink.  In the '50s and '60s it was promoted as a tourist spot and real estate boomed -- but then due to a number of factors (including the fact that excessive heat in the summer kills off hundreds of thousands of fish every year, leaving a bad stench) the Sea was mostly abandoned.

This place is weird and yet fascinating.  Once you've been here you won't forget it and you'll have a nagging itch to come back.

This cache is nearby a couple items that will remind you that there is a home back home.  It is Geotrucker Friendly!  Right off the edge of a parking lot so easy to park and walk to.  Not in plain sight so you’ll need to see if anything moves to find it -- typical LPC.
