Geocache Description:

The Maryland Municipal League Geotrail 2013
Celebrating Maryland’s Cities and Towns.
La Plata - MML District 4

The trail consists of 10 MML participating Districts (regions).
The MML Geocache Trail project will launch January 5, 2013 with 49 participating cities and towns. A trackable geocoin will be awarded to the first 200 geocachers as an incentive for locating at least 2 municipal caches in each of the 10 participating districts. To be eligible for the coin, geocachers must download a MML 2013 passport, find and log at least 20 of the MML 2013 geocaches. Geocachers must record the code word from the cache in their passport, and post a picture at the cache location on the cache page with your found log in order to earn the coin. However, this is not required to log the find.

After finding at least two municipal caches in each of the 10 participating districts, geocachers may return their completed passport to the MML Office in Annapolis for validation to receive their collectable geocoin. Please refer to the passport or MML website for complete details.

For a complete list of participating towns or for updated information, visit the MML web site at MML link or the Maryland Geocaching Society web site at MGS Link

You are seeking a traditional cache located near Town Hall. The container is stocked with a log book and a variety of swag. Please no night caching!

According to one of several legends, the town was given its name by Colonel Samuel Chapman, whose family owned 6,000 acres of land in Southern Maryland, including what would become the areas of La Plata and Port Tobacco. The Colonel traveled to Central and South America with his son George, who had contracted tuberculosis, in search of a cure. In his travels, the Colonel was impressed with the La Plata River in Argentina, so he decided to name a portion of his property "La Plata" after the river.

The town was founded in 1888, after the river flowing into the previous county seat, Port Tobacco (a few miles to the west), silted up, ending that town's utility as a port. At the same time, a new railroad line made La Plata attractive as a new county seat location. The courthouse was built there after the Port Tobacco courthouse burned down (arson suspected, but unproven). Christ Episcopal Church was dismantled stone by stone and rebuilt in La Plata.

The Town of La Plata thanks you for visiting!
