In 1882, Tesla began working for the Continental Edison Company in France, designing and making improvements to electrical equipment.

In June 1884, he was invited to relocate to America. After a mutiny broke out on the ship he was sailing on and most of his belongings were stolen he arrived at the Castle Garden immigrant processing station, located at the tip of Manhattan, (Ellis Island did not become a gateway of welcome for immigrants until 1892.) with 4 cents, his few remaining personal belongings and a letter or recommendation.

This letter of recommendation was written to Thomas Edison by Charles Batchelor, the head of the Continental Edison Company in Paris. The letter read: “I know of two great men, one is you and the other is this young man (Tesla)”.It is disputed if Tesla began work for Edison at Edison Machine Works the day he landed in America or the day after. What a letter of recommendation!
