Ah, did the picture 'spark' any memories of a trip to a museum or maybe from school? Today we know this 'lightning machine' as a novelty, but it was key to Tesla's experiments with electrical lighting, phosphorescence, x-ray generation, high frequency alternating current phenomena, electrotherapy, and the transmission of electrical energy without wires. It was also used in in sparkgap radio transmitters for wireless telegraphy until the 1920s.
