A small cache located close to Old Sarum Airfield. This can be done as a cache and dash or if you have the means a fly and dash.
Old Sarum Airfeld is one of the few remaining Airfields which has been in constant use since World War 1.
Starting life as a training field for the Royal Flying Crop, the predecessor of the Royal Air Force, Old Sarum helped to train fighter and bomber pilots for action in the skies above France and Belgium.
At the end of World War I, Old Sarum was one of the few airfields which were not closed down as part of the post war run-down. In the early part of the 1920s, the prime task was the development of efficient air/ground communication under operational conditions, principally between Army officers, including those of the newly formed armoured forces and the pilots and observers of the RAF Army Cooperation Squardrons. Then from about 1926 onwards, Old Sarum was used for much darker purposes - supporting the Experimental Gas School at nearby Porton Down.
At the outbeak of the WW2 Old Sarum once more became a training station, helping to train Huricane, Spitfire and Tomahawk pilots. A task it did admirably despite still possessing a grass strip which hampered its ability in regard to these high performance fighters.
When WW2 came to an end Old Sarum became home to the School of Land/Air Warfare, training Air Force, Army and Navy officers. In 1956, in recognition of its importance and longevity, RAF Old Sarum was honoured by being given the Freedom of the City of Salisbury. At about the same time, the station also became the home of the Army Air Transport Training and Development Centre, and home to many early types of helicopters.
In 1982, the airfield left the RAF and became a home to general aviation. These days, the Air field is home to a number of flight trainning schools offering plane, helicopter and even gyrocopter training, and a new aviation museum has opened.
