Geocache Description:

Van Stadens River gorge is part of an initiative launched to protect the conservation value of the area, which encourages owners of natural land in the Van Stadens gorge and surrounding area to set aside part of their properties for the purpose of conservation.

A mere 23 odd land owners live out here in this unspoilt corridor of land.

The conservation intends to allow for the free movement of animals and plants via seed dispersal.

The Van Stadens River was named after Marthinus van Staaden who farmed in the area in the mid 1700's.

Van Stadens Rail Bridge – at 77.4m (254ft) it is the highest 2-ft narrow gauge railway bridge in the world and an amazing engineering feat offering an awesome view of the gorge.

Before doing this cache take a walk along the track and be amazed at what awaits you.

I have it in good faith from one of the landowners that it is safe to park alongside the road.

While you are there take a walk across the road to the now almost forgotten Van Stadens siding where railway trucks are rusting away.

This used to be the watering place for the now redundant Apple Express.

Residents are forever hopeful that the train will run again.

Bring your own pen, this cache can trade in very small items.

Bring your doggie/s but keep them on a leash please.
