A short walk along a public footpath that runs through the grounds of Farleigh Hungerford Castle,
Farleigh Hungerford Castle was built between 1370 and 1380 by Sir Thomas Hungerford, the first speaker of the House of Commons. Built as a fortified mansion and occupied for over three centuries by the Hungerford family, The Castle despite two confiscations by the Crown and many family disasters and scandals, was developed as a luxurious home.
During the Civil War, the castle was occupied by the Parliamentarian owner’s Royalist half brother and captured apparently without bloodshed.
The Castle was later sold by the notorious spendthrift Sir Edward Hungerford lV in 1686.
By the 1730s it had been partly dismantled for its fittings and building stone, following further dilapidation over time, partial use as a farmyard, and the adaptation of the chapel into a “cabinet of curiosities” the castle became a popular romantic ruin.
The chapel is the most impressive of the surviving buildings and beneath still remains the family vault with its unique collection of lead coffins.
Today the castle is in the Guardianship of English Heritage and is open to the public (admission charges apply)
The cache is situated close to the main car park that is accessible when the Castle is open.
Limited parking is available at the front of the gatehouse when the castle is closed, but please do not block the entrance as the local farmer requires access.
Please be aware that the path can be very muddy in poor weather
