As early as 1892, Nikola Tesla created a basic design for radio. Then in July of 1898 he submitted for a new patent for a a wireless control system for vessels and vehicles from a great distance using radio waves– He called it Teleautomatics.

The Chief Examiner from the Patent Office believed this invention was just too outrageous to believe. After visiting Tesla’s lab, and seeing for himself first hand this marvel, Tesla was awarded patent in November 1898 for” Method of and Apparatus for Controlling Mechanism of Moving Vessels or Vehicles” .

During the Electrical Exhibition of 1898 at Madison Square Garden Tesla demonstrated this new technology by constructing a 4 foot boat with an antenna, propeller, rudder and lights. Tesla controlled the boat’s direction with manually operated controls on the ‘command post’. .
