"Someday I'll harness that power!" What Nikola Tesla thought when he first saw a picture of Niagara Falls as a child.

In 1891 Westinghouse installed the Tesla AC power system at Telluride - later known as the Ames Power Plant. This was the first power plant to transmit AC at high voltage for power purposes, at a long distance. The water turbine coupled with the AC power system powered mining machinery 4 miles away. This would be a precursor to Niagara Falls.

In 1895 Westinghouse again used Tesla's AC power system to harness the energy generated from Niagara Falls to send electricity to homes and businesses. On April 15, 1895 the first generator which bore Tesla's name was tested successfully. By November 16th electricity was being transmitted to Buffalo 22 miles away.

If you visit Niagara Falls today, either on the US side or the Canadian side, you will find a bronze statue memorializing Tesla and his feat of spreading electricity far and wide from these falls.
