This cache was inspired by GC2PQDK - Mappy Monday located near Poole which we solved while we were holidaying in Dorset, but didnt get time to go and find it. The cache owner credits the idea to another cache in Devon, so they obviously liked the idea as much as I did. Since then, I've wanted do a similar cache close to home and originally planned to do it using OL24 - White Peak as I'd imagine more people would be likely to have this map. But as you dont actually need a paper copy to find this cache, I decided that somewhere more local would be fine. The puzzle appeals to me as I love maps! Look at a map and you cant help wondering what certain features would look like if you were there. Odd names, or interesting looking places you could go and discover. I hope solving this cache gives you inspiration to go and explore. Dont go to the listed co-ordinates. It is a busy Junction on the A60 and A617. To find this cache, you need to first find an Ordnance Survey Explorer Map for Sherwood Forest. Alternatively, there are means of viewing maps online which would be fine. My paper copy is dated 1996, but I've also used an up-to-date online mapping service and all relevant points appear on both, giving me confidence any modern 1:25000 map would be fine. The cache is located at N53 AB.CDE W001 FG.HIJ The Explorer map on which Sherwood Forest is shown is ??G The Landranger map on which Sherwood Forest is shown is ??H Now locate the 1km by 1km light blue square on the Explorer map on which the listed co-ordinates are located. Follow the instructions below travelling in a straight line from square to square to find the numbers you need. From the starting square, go: 1. East to Well. The spot height given slightly west of this point is a three digit number. The first digit is F. 2. North to Mast. 3. North East to Telephone. 4. South to Triangulation Point. Height of this is CAI. 5. West to Horse Riding. 6. South to Museum. 7. West to Church with Tower. In this square an A road runs vertical North to South. This is the JD-. 8. North to Train Station. 9. East to Picnic Site. 10. North to a square with Landfill/Slag Heap. How many Boundary stones are shown in this square? This is E. 11. West to Fishing. 12. North East to Windmill. 13. North East to other attraction. How many letters are in the type of attraction. This is B. 14. North West to Works. 15. South until you find the forest stone. This is the square in which the cache is hidden. You should now know exactly where.
