'The Hare's Castle in the Annalong Valley, a landmark well known to shepherd and stone-man, gets its name from its resemblance to the animal (Fig.25), but the better known Hare's Gap is called so far as I can discover, from a family named O'Hare who used to farm land in Clonachullion. It is so named, however, in the first Ordnance map of 1834.' From Mourne Country by Estyn Evans. Great views of the valley from the cache location, and a nice stone at cache site perfect for that lunchtime picnic to soak up the views, weather permitting of course. Getting to the top requires a little scrambling, approaching the summit from the SSE direction seems the easiest (trailhead waypoint included), but still tricky, especially coming down again. DO NOT ATTEMPT ALONE (mobile phone signal was non existant for me here). As with all caches placed in the mountains there is a risk of injury. Weather conditions can change rapidly. It is always better to walk in a group than alone and you should ensure you have the necessary skills and are properly equipped for the terrain.
