Geocache Description:

Bottlenose Dolphin

The Bottlenose Dolphin is one of the most well known dolphin types. They are so well known because of their exposure in marine parks and captivity. These dolphins are usually 6 to 13 feet long and weigh between 300 and 1400 pounds.

These dolphins primarily live in the warm, temperate waters of the tropical oceans. Though the dolphins are the same they are categorized by where they live. Some are inshore and others are offshore. The offshore populations, which rarely come close to shore are typically larger, darker, and have shorter fins and beaks.

Dolphins are very social animals and live in small groups known as pods. Though these groups are typically 15 individuals it is not unheard of to number over 1000 animals for short periods of time. They typically eat eels, squid, shrimp, and wide varieties of fish. They will often work in groups to take down schools of fish. They hunt by using echolocation. Echolocation is when the dolphin makes clicking sounds and can determine the size and shape of nearby items based on the return echos.
