Geocache Description:

This cache is an ammo box located in the southern Tinajas Altas mountains along the El Camino del Diablo (The Highway of the Devil). It is located within the Barry Goldwater Air Force Range and is a few miles west of the Cabeza Prieta Wildlife Refuge boundary. A brief description of this infamous route can be read at cache GC294C. It was the search for GC294C that brought us to the area. We had a great time exploring the area, weather was perfect mid 70's. There were a number of rock climbers, and hikers headed up to the high water holes (tanks) in the rocks for which these mountains are named. A permit is required to travel through the Goldwater Range and into the Cabeza Prieta Wildlife Refuge. They can be obtained for free at BLM in Phoenix, or at the Refuge office in Ajo. After March 15 until the fall the only way to get here and over to the cache at Tule Well will be south from Wellton (Exit 30). But, this road along the eastern flank of the Tinajas Altas Mtns is the best way to get here and over to Tule Well anyway. Four wheel drive is recommended because of sand in places, but we did not find it necessary on this trip. The cache is in the rocks not far from parking (N32 18.743, W114 02.850) and contains a Sacajawea dollar, 2 English Pounds, pocket screwdriver set, neon ty-raps, a P-38 opener, carabiner, dinosaur, AZ map, H2O, headband/ear warmer, tape measure, dog chew, cat toy, Apache Longbow coin, poncho and the travel bug "Cruiser". Don't let the history, regulations and permit information scare you off, we did this as a day trip from Mesa and had plenty of time. The drive from Wellton to the cache is about 1 1/2 hours, then about another hour over to Tule Well cache (GC294C). Usual precautions for desert travel apply.

Note: Motown Three cache (GC2E6E) is next to the road coming here shortly after you leave I-8 at Wellton.
