Geocache Description:

This geocache is part of the Sequim Centennial History Challenge series.

PORT WILLIAMS

Port Williams was platted in 1892. The dock with its large hotel, restaurant, and general store were built in 1890. The post office there was established in 1890 and continued until 1919. This Port vied with Dungeness as the Port of Entry for Sequim and the East End.

Today the bluffs have receded approximately 90 feet from their location during the heyday of Port Williams. It is assumed the early entrepreneurs Traves, Gerrish, and Hans Bugge had a hand in this enterprise, the building of the dock, its peripheral buildings and the securing of the commercial contracts which made the operation necessary and profitable. All of them were opportunity-minded businessmen.

At the tip of this dock were two service warehouses, the outer one for perishables like the crab fishing business of 1892, and freight both coming and going, and the inner one for people and their luggage.
