This replaces the old cache *Mutford Bridge*.
When Lowestoft harbour was being built and Lake Lothing opened to the sea, It was then that the lock was built at Mutford Bridge, Oulton Dyke widened and Haddiscoe Cut built to allow boats to travel from Lowestoft upriver to Norwich therefore bypassing Gt. Yarmouth.
The 1827 crossing was replaced in 1894 by a swing bridge that was replaced in 1939. This was replaced in 1992 with a rebuilt lock, a pedestrian bridge and a completely new road layout.
