Geocache Description:


This is my second CB series, the first being the Cedar Bayou Series, on the east side of Beautiful Baytown, Texas.

This CB series is for the landlubbers amongst us, and runs along a segment of a lovely 1.6 mile 'hike and bike trail' in the Northshore/Channelview Area of East Harris County.

The trail is paved with fine gravel. Rest benches and stationary exercise equipment pods are available along the trail for walkers, joggers, and bikers to enjoy.
And now – a bit of history:

Carpenters Bayou runs, southeast, from the southern end of Sheldon Reservoir for about twelve miles, joining Buffalo Bayou at the San Jacinto Battleground. The bayou is named for David Carpenter who was born in the early 1800’s.

Between 1824 and 1828, Stephen Austin granted 297 land titles under contract. Each head of household was awarded a grant, and received a minimum of 177 acres and up to 4,428 acres of land, depending on their intention to farm or raise livestock.

The grant was increased for large families or for those wishing to establish new industry, but the land grant was forfeited if not cultivated within two years.

The settlers who received titles under this contract by Austin were known as the “Old Three Hundred”. They made up the first organized, approved influx of Anglo-American immigrants into an area of Texas where no Spanish or Mexican settelments existed.

Carpenter was partner with William Harris and was one of Stephen F. Austin's "Old Three Hundred".

Carpenter and Harris received a grant title from Austin on August 16, 1824. The land fronted, what is now, Carpenter's Bayou in southeastern Harris County.
Park Hours are 0500 -- 2200 HRS.
 
Designated parking is on the south end of Galena Park ISD Admin building (near BW8 and Woodforest Blve). A pedestrian bridge links the parking area with the trail.
