Geocache Description:

Nearby are the remnants of the "Hollow Tree" for which the trail is named.
The 150 year old landmark hollow tree remained standing after being burned in 1999. Until then, the majestic tulip tree flourished, standing over 80 feet tall. Another fire forced it to be taken down in 2002. The remaining pieces, with their charred insides are all that is left.

Tulip trees, also called yellow poplars, are really wild magnolias. They are among the largest and oldest trees in the state. they flower in spring with a orange/green/yellow blossom.

Despite years of mining and logging in this area, there are still many wonderful large trees to be enjoyed in the forest at Ruffner Mountain: shagbark hickory, white, and chestnut oak, loblolly pines, red cedars, sweet gums, dogwoods, American holly, and other tulip trees. So look around and enjoy!
